Two men have been arrested following an alleged sledgehammer attack on a horse in California.
Deputies from the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office said they arrived at the scene in Porterville on Sunday afternoon to investigate reports of a horse being beaten with a sledgehammer.
They found a white horse tied down to a flatbed trailer in the driveway of a residence.
The horse had head injuries but was still alive, the office reported.
Tulare County Animal Control was contacted and responded, along with an on-call vet.
The injuries to the horse were such that it had to be euthanized.
Maximo Rodriguez, 59, and Martin Padilla, 50, were arrested for cruelty to animals and booked at the Tulare County Sheriff’s Department’s Porterville Substation.
The case remains under investigation.
