A barn fire in Dixon, California, has claimed the lives of six horses.

Firefighters responded to the fire around 1.30am on Friday at the property of Dreamland Farm,  in the 8100 block of North Meridian Rd.

The six-stall barn on the 60-acre farm was engulfed in flames,  Dixon Fire Chief Aaron McAlister told local media.

The horses were valuable competition horses, he reported, with Dreamland Farm being a sale facility that offers Hunter and Jumpers, and some dressage and event horses.

Firefighters managed to minimise damage to a neighbouring barn.

Fire crews  from the Vacaville Fire Protection District, Vacaville Fire Department and Winters Fire Department helped in fighting the blaze.

The cause of the fire has yet to be established, but there was no evidence of foul play.
