Ten show horses died in a stable fire in North Carolina on Thursday night.

The caretaker in the complex at B&B Stables, off Charlotte Highway, escaped with minor injuries.

Two horses are understood to have escaped – one was freed and another managed to escape the building itself.

The blaze was reported about 9.20pm. Firefighters arrived to find the wooden building, which had 40 stalls, engulfed in flames.

About 75 firefighters from several local departments turned out. It took an hour to control the blaze.
