Unbeaten galloper Frankel is set to be crowned Britain’s Horse of the Year for the second year in succession following his triumph on Saturday in the Champion Stakes at Ascot.

Trainer Sir Henry Cecil said after the race that: “I cannot believe in the history of racing that there has ever been a better racehorse”.

The four-year-old Galileo colt now retires to owner Khalid Abdulla’s Banstead Manor Stud with a perfect record of 14 wins from 14 starts under Tom Queally, 10 of which came at Group One level.

Frankel’s victory over Cirrus Des Aigles, winner of the QIPCO Champion Stakes the previous year, means he is certain to be the Cartier Horse Of The Year again. He will become the first horse ever in the 22-year history of the Cartier Racing Awards to receive this accolade in successive years next month.

Ouija Board is the only dual winner of the Cartier Horse Of The Year to date, gaining this top award in both 2004 and 2006.

Frankel has 192 points, clear of QIPCO 2,000 Guineas and Investec Derby winner Camelot (168), with unbeaten juvenile colt Reckless Abandon on 128.

The Cartier Awards were established in 1991 to reward excellence in horseracing. They are determined by points earned by horses in Pattern races throughout 2012, combined at the end of season with the opinions of a panel of racing journalists and votes from readers of the Racing Post and The Daily Telegraph.

In addition to eight equine awards, the Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit goes to the person or persons who, in the opinion of the special Cartier Jury, has/have done the most for European racing and/or breeding either over their lifetime or within the past 12 months.

European horseracing’s equivalent of the Oscars will be presented during a glittering ceremony before an invited audience at London’s Dorchester Hotel on Tuesday, November 13.

In the Cartier Older Horse category, Frankel holds an even more commanding advantage on points. He is well clear of Cirrus Des Aigles, who is up to 112 following his gallant Ascot second at the weekend.

Saturday’s impressive Queen Elizabeth II Stakes sponsored by QIPCO hero Excelebration, who has been runner-up to Frankel four times and third on another occasion, joins Moonlight Cloud, a dual Group One winner in France this season, on 100 points.

Frankel also captured the Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt Award last year and was Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt in 2010.
