Björn Nagel quits showjumping for Ukraine

The Ukrainian team of Cassio Rivetti, Katharina Offel, Aleksander Onischchenko and Bjorn Nagel won the fifth leg of the FEI Nations Cup European Promotional League 2012 at Drammen, Norway on Saturday 23 June. The Ukraine now heads the league table with just one qualifying competition remaining.

Showjumper Björn Nagel will compete under the German flag again after riding for Ukraine for several years.

Nagel, 34, rode for his adopted country in Nations’ Cups,  European Championships, World Championships and the Olympic Games in Hong Kong and London.

“It was a great time and it was a lot of fun for me,” he said. “We have not parted ways on bad terms. It was a very interesting six years with Alexander Onyshenko and the team, but now there are new goals. People are continually developing and have to set new priorities,” is how Nagel explained his change of nationality.

The formalities have been completed at the FEI and Nagel is allowed to ride in international competitions, but for the next two years he won’t be able to compete in World Cups, Nations’ Cups or Championships for Germany.

“That is the international rule,” said Nagel, who is based in Friedrichskoog, Germany.

Nagel has also had a long discussion with the trainer Heinrich-Hermann Engemann.

“With the respective results I will have the same opportunity as everybody else to start at international shows. At the moment my horses are a bit young for that, but of course I would like to compete again at the international level in the near future.”
