Six horses have died in an early-morning fire at an equestrian complex in Iowa.

Fire crews were called out just before 1.40am on Sunday to the property at 3077 170th Street, north of Fort Madison.

The flames were visible from a considerable distance and the 20,000 square foot structure, including an indoor arena and horse stables, was destroyed.

The Denmark and Weaver fire departments responded to the call.

The cause of the blaze has yet to be determined.
