The HSI 2012 Breeders Awards took place on Tuesday at the Amber Springs Hotel, Gorey, Co. Wexford.  The Breeders Awards, which were held following the Irish Horse Board Co-Op AGM, highlighted the best of Irish breeding and honoured the breeders of top class Irish Sport Horses and Irish Draught Horses.

Catherine and Edward Doyle, breeders of the Irish Sport Horse stallion Flexible (ISH), were awarded ‘Breeder of the Top International Showjumping Horse’.  Flexible, ridden by US rider Rich Fellers, has had an incredible year in 2012, winning the Rolex FEI Showjumping World Cup at the age of 16 years and finishing in fifth place in the WBFSH World Rankings for showjumping horses.

The award for Breeder of the Top International Eventing Horse was awarded posthumously to the late Dr Donal Geaney, Castleisland, Co. Kerry, breeder of Irish Sport Horse gelding Mr Medicott.  Mr Medicott, ridden by Karen O’Connor (USA), recorded top 5 finishes in all three of his international outings this year and ranked 1st in the WBFSH 2012 eventing rankings.

The 2012 Outstanding Contribution Award was awarded posthumously to Ms Iris Kellett. Iris Kellett had a tremendous influence on Irish equestrianism.  She became a household name in 1949 when she won the Princess Elizabeth Cup at White City, London.  Twenty years later she went on to win the Championship of Europe. Following her competitive career Kellett devoted herself to teaching equestrianism. In sharing her expertise in horse breeding, production, training and competition Irish was an inspiration to generations of Irish breeders riders. She died in March 2011 at the age of 85.

“Irish Sport Horses have achieved some outstanding results in 2012 including top performances at the London Olympic Games, a win at the Rolex FEI Showjumping World Cup and reclaiming 1st place in the WBFSH studbook eventing rankings,” said Alison Corbally, HSI’s Director of Breeding and Programmes.

“The HSI Breeders Awards are a great opportunity to acknowledge the breeders of these outstanding horses who are contributing so much to Irish Sport Horse breeding.”
