Political career of “Mr Donkey” over before it starts

“Mr Donkey” came across as the strong, silent type, and cut a dashing figure with his necktie, but Ecuadorean officials still rejected efforts to get him on the ballot paper for national elections.

Dozens of citizens escorted Mr Donkey to electoral offices in the city of Guayaquil on Thursday, but officials refused to let him in the door.

Supporters had hoped to get him registered for the election.

His supporters had even mocked up a ballot paper, showing Mr Donkey’s head superimposed on that of a man in a suit.

Supporters said the aim of the stunt was to draw attention to the seriousness of the February election.
