British equestrian media is reporting that retired British steeplechaser Kauto Star is to be retrained as a dressage horse with eventer Laura Collett.
Horse & Country TV reported this week that Olympic eventing coach Yogi Breisner would oversee the retraining of Kauto Star – one of Britain’s most successful National Hunt horses – as a dressage horse, with the ride going to Laura Collett, 23.
The horse is at her yard in Wiltshire.
Kauto Star, who was retired in November, is owned by Clive Smith. He boasted a Timeform rating of 191 at his best, making him the joint-third best chaser of all time.
The 12-year-old’s record at Haydock Park was outstanding, with four victories in the Betfair Chase (2006, 2007, 2009 and 2011). Ruby Walsh partnered him to three of those victories, with Sam Thomas taking the mount in 2007.
Kauto Star, who was bred in France, won the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park on a record five occasions (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2011), the Cheltenham Gold Cup twice (2007 & 2009), and won the four victories in the Betfair Chase in2006, 2007, 2009 and 2011.
