Mounted games rider drowns in NZ river

Australian mounted games rider Mathew Slade has died while swimming in the Waikato River in New Zealand.

The body of Slade, 21, was found on Thursday by police divers at about 2pm.

Slade, who had been in New Zealand since December 22, was riding training horses in  before the World Mounted Games Championships in Taupo in March.

He had been swimming downstream of the Aratiatia dam in Taupo. He went swimming on Wednesday at about 6.15pm and soon after called for help. A companion ran to the riverbank but Slade had disappeared.

Slade represented Australia in the sport of mounted games.
