Eleven horses are dead and several others have been injured in a stable fire in northwest Fort Worth, Texas.

The fire at a property in the 3000 block of Northwest 30th Street, known as “The Ranch”, which boards horses, broke out early on Monday morning.

Strong winds fanned the blaze.

It was spotted by a passing police patrol around 2.30am.

Police and firefighters from the Fort Worth Fire Department managed to free eight horses, three of whom suffered visible burns. One was not expected to survive.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the blaze in the three-building complex, which reportedly had no electrical or heating system.

One fireman suffered minor burns to his hands as he worked to free horses nearest the seat of the blaze. Two pieces of machinery, a trencher and a skid loader, and two vehicles were also destroyed in the fire.
