A movie about longshot Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird is to be released this year, titled 50 to 1.

The film was produced and directed by Jim Wilson, the Academy Award-winning producer of Dances With Wolves, The Bodyguard and Wyatt Earp.

Mine that Bird won the Derby in 2009 at odds of 50 to 1, and is one of only nine geldings to win the race and the second gelding to win since 1929. In the two remaining races of the US Triple Crown, he finished second in the Preakness and third in the Belmont.

Trainer Chip Woolley drove 21 hours to get Mine That Bird from New Mexico to Louisville for the Run for the Roses. The gelding was in last place for much of the race, but Borel maneuvered Mine That Bird along the rail on a rain-soaked track to take the lead.

He won by by 6 3/4 lengths, the greatest margin of victory in the Derby since 1946. A $2 wager to win returned $103.20, giving Mine That Bird the second-biggest upset in Kentucky Derby history.

Mine That Bird retired in November 2010 after failing to win a race from nine starts following the Derby.

The New Mexico horse is about as famous in the state as Area 51. He is owned by New Mexicans Mark Allen and Dr Leonard Blach, and was trained on their ranches in Roswell.

“The film follows the humorous adventures of a small, crooked-footed horse and his cowboy owners and trainer, who take to the highway in an unlikely bid to win America’s premier horse race, The Kentucky Derby. Misfits in the regal world of Kentucky blue bloods, these charming rascals face multiple mishaps and obstacles along the way to the winner’s circle.”

Mark Allen, will be portrayed by acto -singer Christian Kane (Leverage, Hide, Her Minor Thing), while Skeet Ulrich (Jerico, Law and Order LA, Into the West) has been cast as Chip Woolley.

I do not support horse racing and boycott all movies and media that depict it as a sport.

The day that every single race horse is treated with respect and compassion from the moment of birth until a humane end – which almost never happens – then and only then will I pay a red nickel to Hollywood or give the racing industry my respect.

Horses deserve better, and the racing industry as well as nearly other industry has done nothing but exploit horses and submit them to abuses no healthy normal human on Earth would ever tolerate if it were conducted on them.

@LittleBirdie, do you know for a fact that horses that race are abused? Races horses are bred to run and they love it. They also get treated better than most humans do. They are loved and well cared for at all stages in their life. Yes, some get injured, but that can happen on and off the track. Even trail horses get injured. You cannot put all horse people in the same category that the very fewwho do mistreat horses are in. Such a shame that you cannot see the beauty of horse racing for what it is. Oh, and we do NOT exploit our horses.
