Nine horses have perished in a barn fire in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana.

The Lafayette Parish Fire Department was called to Carmel Drive around 4.10am on Wednesday, where they found the barn well ablaze.

Firefighters tried to enter the barn in a bid to save the horses, but the fire was too intense.

The blaze took 15 minutes to control. The barn was destroyed.

The cause is still be investigated, with a lightning strike a possibility, given storm activity in the area.
