Eighteen horses lost in Georgia stable fire

Eighteen horses have perished in a stable fire in the American state of Georgia, with losses reported to be close to $US1 million.

The fire at the Brookwood Equestrian Center, in Bishop, early on Friday was probably caused by an electrical issue, authorities believe.

It started near the tack room.

The Oconee County Fire Department sent 28 volunteer tankers and seven trucks when it got the call, around 1.30am.

Just one horse escaped the barn, but was euthanized because of its injuries.

The Athens Banner-Herald reported that the horses were valued at $US600,000, while the barn, truck and horse trailer lost in the blaze were valued at $US350,000.

The farm has been owned for eight years by King Howington and his wife, Melanie, the website reported.
