Belgian veterinarian Dr Tom Mariën is opening a new clinic specialising in equine stem cell therapy and surgery.

The new clinic, which opens in Lummen on April 24, is being described as  “unparalleled” in Europe. It will have its own stem cell bank.

Mariën, of Equitom, is well known in Belgium for his successful efforts to save the foal Kastelino, who was found in his field in Beverlo last August with severe injuries.

The clinic will be opened next week, and local dignitaries Herman Reynders, Limburg’s provincial governor, and Lummen Mayor Luc Wouters will be in attendance.

Kastelino returned to his home in December, following plastic surgery and skin-based stem cell treatment of his wound. The youngster was the first horse in the world to be successfully treated with skin based stem cells.

Stem cell was the only thing that worked on my mares tendon injury. It’s curing laminitis.

I had stem cell therapy from harvested bone marrow injected into my mares tendons and it also worked with adjuvant PRP treatment. Sound horse since.
