The career of Ben Maher’s showjumper Urico is over after the 13-year-old sustained an injury whilst competing in the Longines Grand Prix of La Baule in France over the weekend.

Urico, who is owned by Jane Clark, was assessed by British Team veterinarian Bobby McEwen and sent to a clinic in Nantes, where he is to undergo surgery to repair the injury.

The nature of the injury has not been revealed by connections.

“Jane, myself and our team are devastated but are confident that Urico will make a full recovery, so that this talented horse can retire from international competition and enjoy a retirement at Jane Clark’s farm in Wellington, Florida,” Maher said.

“Jane and I would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and well wishes. We appreciate everyone’s consideration and care.”

Bred in The Netherlands, Urico (Zandor Z x Omara) was ridden by the USA’s Mario Deslaurier from 2009 until Maher took over the ride in early 2013. The horse was previously ridden by Spain’s Paola Amilibia.
