Aussies in early lead at Saumur 3* horse trials

Australian riders hold the top two places after the first day of dressage at the three-star Saumur International Horse Trials in France.

Andrew Hoy and Cheeky Calimbo scored an impressive 39.20 to lead from Chris Burton and Graf Liberty with 46.0. In third at this stage is Italian rider Stefano Brecciarolo and P’tit Paul de Terry with 46.20.

In fourth is China’s Alex Hua Tian with Harbour Pilot C with 49.0, and Rodney Powell is the leading British rider, in fifth with Happy Go Lucky on 49.20.

New Zealand Olympic rider Jonelle Richards is in 18th place with the Irish Sport Horse Aloha, on 56.0. She also rides Faerie Dianimo on Friday.

A field of 37 performed their dressage tests on Thursday, in front of judges Alain James (France), Sandy Phillips (GBR) and Catherina Agaesse (France). Another 32 will compete on Friday.
