London 2012 Olympic silver medallist Zara Phillips is looking forward to the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games following the announcement of her inclusion in the Great Britain squad for the Games in Normandy, France.
The Games have been host to some of Phillips’s career highlights, including individual gold and team silver medals at the 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games in Aachen, Germany.
“I think the World Equestrian Games are very important. They are a very tough and great occasion, and it’s a very exciting competition to be involved with.”
Phillips recently returned to competition after the birth of her daughter, Mia.
She was named on the British squad along with Tina Cook (De Novo News), William Fox-Pitt (Chilli Morning), Pippa Funnell (Billy Beware), Izzy Taylor (Allercombe Ellie), and Oliver Townend (Black Tie II).
She said it was fantastic to be part of a team again. “We’ve got a bit of work still to do to get back to where we were last year but will have a few more outings to make sure we are right on target with our preparation. Last time [WEG, 2006] was our first four star Championships, so was a totally different experience. We had a fantastic week and I hope we can produce a good result for the team and the country.
“High Kingdom has improved each year and every time I’ve taken him to a big competition he’s got better and better. He’s felt good this year and hopefully will peak at the right time.”
So apart from Team GB, who does Phillips think will do well?
“The Germans are always strong and the French are on home soil– but everyone has a chance. At the moment you can call anyone, I reckon!”
