A woman who suffered pelvic injuries in a  riding accident near Auckland on Sunday was airlifted to hospital.

The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter Trust said the woman had been on a hunt when the horse was spooked and reared up. It fell over backwards, crushing the woman.

She was flown by rescue helicopter to Auckland City Hospital in a serious condition.

The helicopter was able to land just metres from the accident scene at South Head.
