A seagull got up for second in the fourth race at Britain’s Brighton track on Tuesday, just pipped by Jewelled in the race for four-year-old mares.

The seagull swooped for the line but didn’t quite manage to best Jewelled, but finished ahead of Sagesse, with Hi Note third in the six-horse race.

Racecourse spokesman George Hill told BBC Sport: “We are about a mile and a half from the sea, and there are a lot of seagulls around, but this has never happened before as far as we are aware.”

Apparently some racegoers thought the seagull should have been given second place, however it was not clear if the bird had completed the full distance of the 2000m race.
