A woman in New Zealand’s North Island was airlifted to hospital on Saturday night after her car collided with a horse on the road.

The woman suffered serious head and chest injuries.

The Tauranga-based Trustpower TECT rescue helicopter was dispatched to Te Kaha to pick up the 41-year-old victim.

The accident happened about 9.30pm, east of Omaio.

The woman was travelling with two young children, who were unharmed in the crash.

The car’s roof was ripped off in the crash and it is unknown what happened to the horse.

The helicopter was sent because of the remote location of the accident and the extent of the woman’s injuries. She was flown to Tauranga hospital in a serious condition.
